Allamah Ibn Abiddin on setting up extravagant lights and lamps on the special nights


‘Allamah Ibn ‘Abiddin writes, “Note: These are worst innovations prevalent in many countries that they burn candles and lamps wasting much money in certain nights of the year like in 15th night of Sha’ban. It involves many evils; one of them is to resemble the Zoroastrians as they also pay much attention to the fire. The other evil is to waste money needlessly. Also, it carried other evils like gathering of young and idle ones and their playing, making noise and abuse of mosques and violating of their sanctity and making it dirty and many other evils from which the mosques should be protected. (Sharh al-Muhazzab of Imam Nawawi, may Allah have mercy upon him) Our elder scholars, may Allah be pleased with them, have clarified that it is unlawful to burn extra lamp in mosques whether in Ramadan or in any other month [e.g. Rabi’ al-Awwal], because it is squandering, as it is mentioned in Al-Zakhirah and other books, ’Allamah al-Zamakhshari says in Rabi’ al-Abrar about the food and their variety: “It was the way of the salaf to offer all types in one go so that one eats what he wishes.”( Al-`Uqud al-Durriyyah Tanqih al-Fatwa al-Hamidiyyah, 7:408)

( فَائِدَةٌ ) مِنْ الْبِدَعِ الْمُنْكَرَةِ مَا يُفْعَلُ فِي كَثِيرٍ مِنْ الْبُلْدَانِ مِنْ إيقَادِ الْقَنَادِيلِ الْكَثِيرَةِ الْعَظِيمَةِ السَّرَف   ِ فِي لَيَالٍ مَعْرُوفَةٍ مِنْ السَّنَةِ كَلَيْلَةِ النِّصْفِ مِنْ شَعْبَانَ فَيَحْصُلُ بِذَلِكَ مَفَاسِدُ كَثِيرَةٌ مِنْهَا مُضَاهَاةُ الْمَجُوسِ فِي الِاعْتِنَاءِ بِالنَّارِ فِي الْإِكْثَارِ مِنْهَا وَمِنْهَا  إضَاعَةُ الْمَالِ فِي غَيْرِ وَجْهِهِ وَمِنْهَا مَا يَتَرَتَّبُ عَلَى ذَلِكَ مِنْ الْمَفَاسِدِ  مِنْ اجْتِمَاعِ الصِّبْيَانِ وَأَهْلِ الْبَطَالَةِ وَلَعِبِهِمْ وَرَفْعِ أَصْوَاتِهِمْ وَامْتِهَانِهِمْ الْمَسَاجِدَ  وَانْتِهَاكِ حُرْمَتِهَا وَحُصُولِ أَوْسَاخٍ فِيهَا وَغَيْرِ ذَلِكَ مِنْ الْمَفَاسِدِ الَّتِي   يَجِبُ صِيَانَةُ الْمَسْجِدِ عَنْهَا شَرْحُ الْمُهَذَّبِ لِلْإِمَامِ النَّوَوِيِّ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى    وَصَرَّحَ أَئِمَّتُنَا الْأَعْلَامُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُمْ بِأَنَّهُ لَا يَجُوزُ أَنْ يُزَادَ  عَلَى سِرَاجِ الْمَسْجِدِ سَوَاءٌ كَانَ فِي شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ أَوْ غَيْرِهِ لِأَنَّ فِيه  ِ إسْرَافًا كَمَا فِي الذَّخِيرَةِ وَغَيْرِهَا قَالَ الْعَلَّامَةُ الزَّمَخْشَرِيُّ فِي رَبِيعِ الْأَبْرَارِ   مِنْ بَابِ الطَّعَامِ وَأَلْوَانِهِ مَا نَصُّهُ ” كَانَتْ سُنَّةُ السَّلَفِ أَنْ يُقَدِّمُوا جُمْلَةَ الْأَلْوَانِ دَفْعَةً لِيَأْكُلَ مَا يَشْتَهِيهِ
