Al-Bariqah al-Mahmudiyyah on some prevalent innovations


Famous Ottoman scholar ‘Allamah Abu Sa’id Muhammad al-Khadimi  (d. 1176 A.H) writes in Al-Bariqah al-Mahmudiyyah – a commentary of Tariqah Muhammadiyah of Imam Muhammad Birgivi (d.981 AH) – about prevalent innovations:

ومنها إيقاد الشموع في القبور ؛ لأنه إسراف وبدعة ضلالة واتخاذ المساجد فيها ) أي القبور ( د ت عن ابن عباس رضي الله تعالى عنهما { أن رسول الله صلى الله تعالى عليه وسلم لعن زائرات القبور والمتخذين عليها المساجد والسرج } ) أي القبور ، وأيضا لا يجوز تجصيص القبر وتطيينه وإلصاق اللوح والكتابة عليه والبناء عليه

“One of them [innovations] is to burn candles over graves; since it is squandering, deviant innovation and making graves as worship-places, as it is related by Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): “The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, cursed the women visiting the graves and those make graves worship-places and burn candles over there.” Likewise, cementing graves and plastering, putting slab, engraving it and erecting building over them is also not permissible.”

يجب ازالة كل قنديل وسراج وشمع اوقدت على القبور لان فاعل ذلك ملعون بلعنة رسول اللّه  صلى اللّه عليه وسلم فكل ما لعن فيه رسول اللّه  صلى اللّه عليه وسلم فهو من الكبائر

“It is necessary to remove the lamp and candle lit on the graves; since those who do so are accursed by the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, so every action for which the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, accursed is a major sin (kabair).”

والذى عليه ائمة المسلمين وجمهور العلمأ ان السفر للمشهد التى هى على القبور غير مشروع بل هو معصية من اشنع المعاصى حتى لا يجوز قصر الصلوة فيه عنده من لا يجوز قصرها فى سفر المعصية لقوله صلى اللّه عليه وسلم

“The Imams of Muslims and majority of ‘ulama hold that undertaking travels for tombs and mausoleums is un-Islamic, even it is most heinous sin, and even the scholars who do not allow shortening salah (qasr) in sinful journeys, they do not allow qasr in such travels.”

أقبح البدع عشرة أولها تلاوة القرآن بالأجرة سيما بغلة النقود فإن وقفها باطل وكذا الذكر والدعاء والصلاة ومنه التسبيح ونحوه لترويج المتاع ونحوه ويدخل فيه القراءة بعد الصلاة لسؤال المال وثانيها طعام الميت وإيقاد الشموع في المقابر والجهر بالذكر أمام الجنازة والعروس ونحوهما والبناء على القبر وتزيينه والبيتوتة عنده ثالثها الجماعة في النفل ويدخل فيه صلاة الرغائب والبراءة والقدر والتسبيح بالجماعة سابعها التغني وسماع الغناء ومنه اللحن في

“The worst bid’ahs are ten:

[a] First reciting the Qur’an on payment specially with cash; since its endowment (waqf) is invalid. And similar is the case with dhikr, du’a, and salah and tasbih, etc. due to prevalence of cash and kind. Also, it includes reciting after salah, as it is for requesting money.

[b] The second is the food of dead, burning candles on graves, performing dhikr with loud voice in front of janazah, celebrating ‘urs, etc. erecting building on graves, decorating them and spending night near graves.

[c] The third is performing nafl (optional) salah in congregation (jama’ah) which includes salah al-raghayib, bara’ah, Al-Qadr, salah al-tasbih.

[d] The fourth is listening ghina‘ (mystic song). Likewise, reciting the Qur’an and performing dhikr in musical tone, mystic dance (raqs) and ecstasy….”
